Angelo Reyes' Sacrifice?

I don't really understand President Ramos' recent comments on Angelo Reyes. Here's what he said:

Ramos said Reyes did what he did because he “tried to save the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines ] and its three major services.”
“He tried to save the institutions that he represented. Let’s just take it that way . . . that his sacrifice was not in vain,” said Ramos.

I don't get how what he did was in any way for the AFP. If anything, he did it solely because he wanted to save himself, his family, and the Reyes reputation. And it's working! It's happening perfectly!
Estrada also said that he wanted the family of Reyes to be spared from the Senate investigation into the alleged corruption in the military.
The senator does not only want the Senate to end its inquiry but also wanted Reyes’ name to be removed from the report of the committees handling the controversy.
You see that, with one masterful stroke Reyes not only makes himself automatically innocent, but safeguards his family from any further inquiry.

If there's one thing you can rely on, it's that everyone will love you once you're dead. Everyone will only have nice things to say about you, and everyone will feel so sorry for your family. When Michael Jackson died, no one cared anymore about drug use or child molestation, suddenly everyone loved him again! Even kids who were born 30 years after his singles came out suddenly got in on it. Dying was the best thing he could have done for his career.

And it's the same way here. Will anyone investigate Reyes' possible participation in this scandal anymore? Now way. He is unofficially proclaimed innocent. Innocent via death. There wasn't any new evidence that came out to clear his name, we haven't determined for a fact that he's innocent, but we're gonna act like he is simply because he's dead. He'll get his full military honors, he'll get buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, and everyone will simply stop asking questions. Is it just? Who knows. Will anyone care? No. The fear of public backlash will paralyze everyone in their tracks.

He maintains his innocence, his family is safe, their name isn't disgraced. All with the squeeze of a trigger. A military man through the end.

Update:
Senator Enrile proves my point yet again
In a chance interview with Enrile after his visit to the wake of the late secretary at the St. Ignacius Chapel at Camp Aguinaldo, he told reporters that the family of Reyes has a reputation to protect and unless there is great evidence linking them to the alleged anomalies within the military, they will not be called to present at the Senate inquiry.

  1. You know what really bugs me about this? How nobody seems to want to point out how this man, once in charge of every person in uniform in this country, effectively a symbolic mentor to every man and woman tasked with defending its people, took the coward's way out of this whole mess. Because whatever you say, whatever justification people have for this, him putting a bullet through his chest was the coward's way of dealing with this. As a soldier, he deserves no amount of respect for that.

  2. True dat. If you're innocent, prove it to everyone. If you're guilty, face the consequences of what you've done. Done pull a SWAT-entering-the-bus and run away from it
